To get get out of your own way may be hard because there are many things or factors that may prove as obstacles that make it impossible for you to achieve your goals or to live the life that you dream of living.
These things could be an unsupportive partner, a flat tire, spoilt things, lack of resources, ill health, etc. But, there are times we are the ones preventing ourselves from living our lives.
Hence, you must get out of your own way, stop self-sabotaging and stop being the obstacle that prevents you from going forward.
So, how will you get out of your own way and embrace the life you truly want? This article will teach you all about that.
1 Just start
The easiest way to get out of your own way is to start doing what you have to do no matter the fear you are feeling and your mind’s tendency to overthink what you want to start doing.
I read somewhere that the first step is always difficult but when you take that step, it is easier for you to take the rest of the steps.
Our minds may overthink, and we may come up with several reasons why procrastinating that goal or vision is the best step we should take. But, why don’t you start regardless of those fears?
When you are starting, don’t think of perfection. I am not in any way saying you shouldn’t strive for excellence with whatever you are planning to do. But, most times, the strive for perfection is what keeps and prevents us from getting started.
So, get out of your own way by just starting, strive for the best and not necessarily perfection and try to break those tasks or goals into something easier to do.
When you break them down into manageable tasks, you easily see that you are making progress and you can feel yourself get motivated to do what you have to do.
2 Know your purpose
You have probably heard “know your why” several times but it only goes to show how important it is. Knowing your purpose helps you get out of your own way.
Getting in tune with your purpose helps you see why you must push forward, the entire vision of what you want to accomplish, and why you began in the first place.
It is advisable that if what you are hesitant about doing doesn’t align with your big picture, you should give up on doing it. This doesn’t in any way mean that you should not commit yourself to learn doing things that will improve your life in the long run.
3 Say and think positively
Our mind constantly comes up with ways it can prevent us from doing what we want to do and if we don’t make a conscious effort to get out of our own way by removing those negative thoughts and talks, we won’t live the life we want.
Each time negative thoughts come up like “you are not good enough” “you will fail” “you will embarrass yourself” “you are a failure” etc., try to replace them with positive thoughts.
Doing this may be difficult at first because your mind is probably used to the negative thoughts and talks. So, sit down one day and write down your negative thoughts, and replace them with positive ones.
Affirm these positive thoughts by saying them out loud and believing them. Soon, when the negative thoughts may come up, you will be able to keep them at bay while living the life you want.
4 Know your strengths
All of us have our areas of strength that leave us feeling energized or happy when we finish doing that thing. You don’t necessarily have to be perfect in that area. But, you find joy in doing it.
Your area of strength helps you in performing that activity every day. When you leverage your area of strength, you feel energized to get out of your own way and do that activity that will get you closer to your goal.
5 Stop comparison
Comparison is one thing that has made people feel like a failure, depressed and unmotivated to achieve what they want to achieve.
To get out of your own way and to stop being your own obstacle, stop comparing yourself to others because if you want to be honest, there are ways you fall short of them and vice versa.
Instead of comparing yourself to others, compare and compete yourself to the previous version of yourself. Be grateful and also look for ways you can improve.
Also, the people you are comparing yourself to could be just the people you need to maintain close company with because they can help you improve your life, learn new habits, and achieve your dreams. Interacting with the right company is what you should do.
6 Be accountable
It is okay to forgive yourself when you mess up or not stick to what you have to do. But, this should not become a habit. Hold yourself accountable for the things you have to do.
You can create a schedule or to-do list and stick to it religiously. In your schedule, only accept tasks you know you can handle well, if the task is something you can outsource to another person who can do a better job, then do it.
Don’t relax or forgive yourself every time while fueling your laziness or constant procrastination. at the same time, don’t give yourself unnecessary pressure. Stick to what you can handle.
7 Engage in self-care
While trying to get out of your own, achieve what you want to achieve, and live your best life, don’t forget to practice self-care.
You are the only one who will stay with you every time, so you need to take care of yourself. Be in tune with your body. Know when your body needs rest and rest.
Self-care routines are many. It could be going on that walk, exercising, going on that date, sleeping a bit earlier because your body needs it, etc.
You stop being your obstacle and get out of your own way to live the life you want. No one is going to do that for you.
