A Compliment is an expression of praise, respect, or congratulations. In our journey of life, especially when it relates to your dealings with people, sincere compliments are necessary.
Complimenting and appreciating the people in your life helps to build the relationship you have with them. It also makes them feel appreciated and special. They will naturally gravitate towards you. Everyone loves to spend time with people that will make them feel good about themselves, and not someone who only sees things to complain about or gives negative remarks.
However, this does not mean that you should just tell people what they need to hear, especially when it is untrue. It is sometimes necessary to point out their shortcomings in love, so that they will improve. Complimenting people costs nothing, and it will not hurt you. Rather, it will make you feel good about yourself, because you have seen something good in someone that you admire.
It was William James who said: “The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated”. This means that no matter your level in life, you stilll desire to be appreciated and complimented. It literally gives you a boost of self-esteem, and everyone needs that.
Have you ever wondered why most people who only receive negative remarks while growing up tend to suffer low self-esteem? It is because those negative remarks, most times, become their version of reality, and they feel so helpless to change it. They get angry with themselves, and they feel stuck there.
So, when you see something good about someone, compliment them. You don’t know if that is just what they need to hear, in order to reach for more in their life. And, while appreciating or complimenting, make sure that it is sincere, it should come from your heart. People can easily tell when a compliment is fake or not.
When the encouragement has to do with their talents, attributes, or physical appearance, it will make them strive to do more of what you are complimenting them for. You should also try and receive compliments. Don’t play down your achievements. And don’t throw away a sincere compliment from someone.
I am cheering you on.
